We all went fancy over Apple when it first launched “Retina
Displays” on iPhone 4, and believed that this is the best any smartphone can
get. But that’s exactly when Android broke silence and came out in open with
development in the devices’ hardware and software. With Android OS developing
at Google’s end, smartphone manufacturers could dedicate a whole lot of time in
the development of the hardware alone. This brought revolution in the
smartphone making and we started getting bigger Smartphones with bigger
hardware upgrades year-by-year.
Ever thought why would companies go for making bigger Smartphones day-by-day? Well, this certainly deserves a minute of your thought, but the answer is simple- Tablets made Smartphones Bigger. Wanna know how? Here it is, with the evolution of Smartphones, we started using them for almost all over connectivity needs and entertainment. Be it E-mails, social network, video chat, photography, to-do-lists, play games, listen tomusic and what not, we got a one stop solution and that’s our smartphone. With needs increasing everyday manufacturers thought of making a device that would replace laptops. That’s when Tablets came into existence, remember the iPad 1, we all loved the fancy of it and went gaga over the features it offered.
Tablets initially came into existence to work as a secondary device, but as days went by tablets grew as independent devices and came equipped with built-in connectivity features. Tablets became the first choice for laptop users as it allowed the combination of work, entertainment and communication on one single platform. But what it could not deliver well was comfortable voice calling, and that is when larger phones came into existence offering tablet like experience in a phone, we all famously call them “Phablet” (Phone+Tablet), Phablets offered a lot more convenience over tablet usage and grew popular among users.
Dell Streak is one of the first phablets to grow popular
among users. Dell in 2009 came up with a 5-inch Phone/tablet for business class
consumers, well it dint sell well and was discontinued soon. It was Samsung to
globally popularize the phablet category of the Smartphones with its Galaxy
Note series, and today except Apple we have almost all the major manufacturers
competing in this category.
Phones dint only become bigger but they also got better. Today we have phones with 5+inch in sizes offering some of the fantastic features in a more reliable way. With the evolution of Smartphones, we no more carry portable digital cameras, MP3 players, calculators and even laptops. We hugely rely on the functionality of Smartphones to do our tasks on the go.
What really attracts the buyers is the display on the
devices, these days we have pretty much set a standard that Smartphones must
have a HD display. We have Samsung Galaxy S4, S4 Active, Galaxy Note 3, HTC
One,HTC butterfly, Butterfly S, Micromax Canvas Turbo, Google Nexus 5 and a lot
more to name offering fullHD display. With bigger and bigger displays companies
have also worked hard in increasing the pixel densities of these HD displays.
The displays have certainly got a lot better offering clear and crisp visuals.
Future of Displays
Well this is something time will decide as to what the futuristic displays will offer, we have been getting some information here hinting at the development of display technology in the future. Our recent story shows Apple to be working on tougher displays with sapphire glass on top and on the other hand we have some information about Samsung to be working on Foldable and flexible displays and might launch them soon on devices in 2015.
Apple’s recent launches include iPhone 5s, iPhone 5c along
with iPad Air and iPad Mini with retina display. The display on iPhones
remained similar to its predecessor but iPad Mini got a huge upgrade where
Apple have incorporated double the resolution than its previous model iPad Mini
in the same 7-inch display size.
We are soon going to see 2K, 3K and 4K resolution displays
on Smartphones as companies are majorly focusing on offering quality visuals.
We also have reports claiming that Apple is also soon planning to come out with
a device that has 5-inch display with a resolution of 1080P. Of course, Apple
would not want to be left behind in the Phablet race.
