HTC is a very popular brand worldwide, it is known for making quality smartphones. The recent models in the HTC One series are very popular among its users. A majority of HTC smartphones in the mid-high end category use Qualcomm Snapdragon processors, which indeed makes HTC device a little over-priced. But that’s not the point anyway because those devices are aimed for high performance and for the elite class of the audience.

There are a lot of devices that come with MediaTek processors boasting high RAM and graphic processors, and are a lot cheaper than these sturdy devices. In its latest move to make HTC devices affordable the company has partnered with MediaTek and Broadcom for the processors to target the mid-range consumers.

With Mediatek and Broadcom processors, the prices of HTC phones are expected to come down a lot. This indeed will boost the sales and give people premium looking devices with HTC tag on them. The current popular smartphones from HTC are HTC One, One mini, One max and a few more in the desire series. These smartphones vary in specs from mid-to-high end but comes with a hefty price tag. Lets wait until HTC puts these Mediatek and Broadcom processors to give us devices in affordable price category.

Major players in the smartphone industry are being strongly dominated by manufacturers like Gionee, Huawei, Lenovo and Micromax (soon to go global) thus HTC needed a way to compete against these manufacturers and still survive with profits in the market. Building partnership with cost effective chip makers seems to be the ultimate solution.

Nokia expected to come up with Dual SIM Lumia Smartphone

We covered news on a rumored development that suggested Nokia to be working on 2 smartphones featuring Windows Phone 8.1 OS. Now another rumor is added to the list suggesting that Nokia is planning to bring the Dual SIM compatibility in its Lumia series of smartphones.

The rumor comes from the popular tipster evleaks, it suggested that Nokia is purportedly working on a Dual SIM enabled Smartphone featuring Windows Phone 8.1 Blue OS, and the device evleaks named is Moneypenny, the one we mentioned in our older story.
Nokia Moneypenny and Goldfinger are the 2 rumored devices from Nokia, which are expected to come with Windows Phone 8.1 Blue OS and will have an improvised notification center along with Cortana voice assistant- something like siri.

This rumor may come out to be true; we speculate it on the grounds of the latest acquisition of Nokia by Microsoft. Microsoft surely would want to compete in the smartphone category and have pie of share.

Phones like Lumia 925, Lumia 1020 and Lumia 1520 are very popular for its design and the built-in camera. Lumia series of phones are certainly popular for its camera quality, check out some of the camera images taken from Lumia smartphone.

HTC One and HTC One mini banned in futuremark ranking

Smartphone manufacturers want to make the most powerful device in the market, some successfully do it and some cheat on the benchmark results to make their devices look powerful. Companies do this to make their devices look more powerful and better than their competitors’.

Last month Samsung was accused of faking the benchmark test results but the company denied the allegations. Time and again when competition in the market increase companies get down to faking the results to get higher score and ranking on the benchmarking sites. In spite of multiple complaints companies like HTC, Samsung and LG were found faking the benchmark results.

To curb the smartphone makers from faking such results, a benchmark company, called futuremark, has publicly de-listed some devices from HTC and Samsung and put them to shame. The company has delisted 2 variants of Samsung Galaxy Note 3 along with 2 versions of Note 10.1. The list of de-listed devices includes 2 from HTC, the HTC one and HTC One mini. Futuremark has also banned the HTC One and the One Mini from its ranking list as well. What sounds weird is that the device that are delisted are actually some of the most powerful and best selling smartphones and that tweaking with the benchmark results was not really needed.

Futuremark’s regulations state that the platform must not, alter, replace or override any parameters or part of the test, nor should it modify the regular functionality of the platform for the detection of the benchmark. HTC and Samsung seemingly have gone against the regulations resulting which the smartphones are de-listed from the website.

Samsung to bring Galaxy S5 in 2 variants along with Galaxy Gear 2

Apple recently launched iPhone 5 in two variants, plastic version iPhone 5c and the metallic version iPhone 5. Both the devices feature similar hardware and software features. A report from Korean website ETnews suggest that Samsung is planning to do something similar with its next flagship smartphone the Galaxy S5. The Galaxy S5 is rumored to come in two variants, one with plastic body and another with metal chassis.

If this rumor turns out to be true we can expect Galaxy S5 in two price segment. Plastic version Galaxy S5 may compete in the mid-high range segment while premium S5 with metallic chassis will compete in the high range segment. There is however no official information on this and it is just a speculation.

The premium model with metal chassis is likely to feature a 5-inch Full HD flexible Active Matrix Organic Light Emitting Diode (AM OLED) display, while the plastic version of the phone will feature flat panel AM OLED display (non-flexible). Rest of the specs on both the devices will stand similar with 16MP rear camera, Android 4.4 KitKat and will be powered by a 64-bit processor coupled with 3GB RAM. The company is planning for a mass production of the device soon and the initial manufacture will produce about 1 million units, which later may be increased to 6 million in February. The device is expected to be launched in March 2014 along with Samsung Galaxy Gear 2. The Galaxy Gear 2 is rumored to be up to 20% thinner than its predecessor and will offer conjunction with Galaxy S5 games, entertainment and healthcare functions.

Ex-Nokia engineers founded Jolla to launch Sailfish smartphones in 136 countries

Jolla is a company founded by ex-Nokia engineers. The company came into existence when Nokia laid off thousands of its employees after losing its hold in the market in 2011. Nokia stuck to making phones of its own Symbian and MeeGo OS and refrained from opting Android. This strategy of Nokia paved way for its competitors to rise.

The Lumia 525 runs Windows Phone 8 Operating System on a Dual-Core Snapdragon S4 chip. The device is supplemented with a 1GB RAM to give this device a nice boost in the performance. Lenovo K900 review

Lenovo K900 is a stainless steel finish phone with a very beautiful design and attractive specs. This device offers very good features at a much lower price compared to other quality handset makers. This is a phablet sized phone with a full HD display measuring 1920x1080 pixels at 401 pixels per inch density. The text on this device appears fantastic and pictures are life like.
Let’s go ahead with the detailed review of this Phablet to find if it’s worth a buy or not.

Design

Not all the phone sells on the basis of their design quotient but this one certainly has that design quotient to fall for. The Lenovo K900 has a 5.5-inch IPS full HD display and despite being so tall the phone measures only 6.9mm thick, I would rather call it 6.9mm thin. This device feels very light at its given size and weighs only 162g. The Lenovo K900 in the rear is divided in three parts- the top, middle and the bottom. The top and bottom are made of polycarbonate plastic and the middle part is made of Stainless steel which is the battery door (non-removable). The plastics on this device have a metallic finish, which makes it look a very premium device. This Smartphone features a Unibody design unlike other Smartphones in this category. Unibody design lets the maker come out with a slimmer phone.
The front side of the phone has the FHD IPS Display with touch sensitive buttons in the bottom. The display on this phone supports fingernail and glove touch features. This phone has sharp corners and looks very beautiful.  On the right side of the phone are the Power button and microSIM slot, Volume buttons are located on the left side. The top has no buttons or ports and the bottom holds the microUSB, a micrphone and 3.5mm earphone jack. On the rear side is the Lenovo logo with a speaker at the bottom. The audio on the external speaker is better than other phones of this genre. On the top is a 13MP camera with dual LED flash accompanied with a secondary microphone for noise cancellation. The phone is beautifully designed that none of the hardware on the phone is affected while keeping the phone down. The camera and LED flash is little under placed to avoid scratches and the speaker has a little mount in order to have good sound quality when keeping the phone on a flat surface.

Camera

The Lenovo K900 has one of the best cameras in the Smartphone industry. This device has a 13Mega Pixel Sony Exmor camera sensor with BSI (Back side illuminated) with f/1.8, this camera is dedicated for perfect shots in both high and low light conditions. The camera app on this phone has a lot of filters and effects for the photos you shoot. This camera is also capable of shooting Full HD videos of 1080p resolution. The front camera on this phone is very much feature packed, it’s got an 88 degree wide angle view which enhances the video calling experience, and it is the widest viewing angle in a Smartphone’s front camera. The camera on the front has a 2Mega Pixel resolution.
Rating: 8/10

Display

Lenovo K900 is packed with a massive 5.5-inch capacitive multi-touch display. The display holds Gorilla Glass 2 and provides protection from all the scratches that this giant screen may attract. The display has a resolution of 1920x1080 pixels at a density of 401 pixels per inch. The display on this device is Full HD IPS. With display this huge Lenovo has done a great job in making this device one of the slimmest in the industry. The iPhone 5 measure 7.6mm while Lenovo k900 is only 6.9mm thick. The display has very good viewing angles and gives perfect grip in the hands and does not feel slippery. Just like any other Phablet of this category this device also supports 16 million colors. Moreover the display is very bright and provides good outdoor vision of the content.
Rating: 8.5/10

Battery

This phone has a battery of 2,500mAH capacity. Due to its unibody construction the battery on this device is non-removable. This battery gives a long back up and the standby time is 300 hours both on 2G and 3G. With a phone this big and battery of this size, I would once again praise Lenovo for making such a slim phone. This battery gives a talk time of 15 hours on 2G and 12 hours on 3G. Phones of this size generally come with a smaller capacity battery in-order to make them device lighter. For its given size the phone feels very light in the hands. The best feature this battery has is that it comes with a fast charging technology and charges fully in mere 90 minutes.

Memory and Software

The Lenovo K900 comes with 16GB built-in storage (about 11GB user available). With features like this and an amazing camera, this memory is surely going to prove less for a Smartphone.  The reason being that, this device does not have a microSD slot for memory expansion. Although it has a huge 2GB RAM and offer amazing multi-tasking. There was no lag in multi-tasking and launching apps. The processor on this phone is clocked at 2GHz speed. It offers very good graphic rendering and processing speeds.
On the software front, this device differs from other Android Smartphones. And just like HTC Sense this device runs Android with Lenovo Emotion UI all over the software. The app drawer is different, the Menu is different, the Notification Bar is skinned, the Settings Menu is different and almost all the insides of the Operating System are heavily tweaked. This device does not have Google Play Store, which is pretty much enough to break the deal. The Google Play store can how ever be installed later by rooting the phone but is a hectic process that ends up voiding your warranty.
Rating: 6/10

Conclusion: Deal or No Deal?

This device has pretty awesome features at a decent price. It has got one of the best cameras in the Industry along with an awesome display. The drawback is that it does not have a Google Play Store and does not support memory expansion. If one can compromise with that then this is a very good buy. There are different ways to install APKs so one may consider buying this phone.

Overall Rating: 7.5/10

My take on the evolution of tablets and the future of smartphone displays

We all went fancy over Apple when it first launched “Retina Displays” on iPhone 4, and believed that this is the best any smartphone can get. But that’s exactly when Android broke silence and came out in open with development in the devices’ hardware and software. With Android OS developing at Google’s end, smartphone manufacturers could dedicate a whole lot of time in the development of the hardware alone. This brought revolution in the smartphone making and we started getting bigger Smartphones with bigger hardware upgrades year-by-year.

Phablets

Ever thought why would companies go for making bigger Smartphones day-by-day? Well, this certainly deserves a minute of your thought, but the answer is simple- Tablets made Smartphones Bigger. Wanna know how? Here it is, with the evolution of Smartphones, we started using them for almost all over connectivity needs and entertainment. Be it E-mails, social network, video chat, photography, to-do-lists, play games, listen tomusic and what not, we got a one stop solution and that’s our smartphone. With needs increasing everyday manufacturers thought of making a device that would replace laptops. That’s when Tablets came into existence, remember the iPad 1, we all loved the fancy of it and went gaga over the features it offered.

Tablets initially came into existence to work as a secondary device, but as days went by tablets grew as independent devices and came equipped with built-in connectivity features. Tablets became the first choice for laptop users as it allowed the combination of work, entertainment and communication on one single platform. But what it could not deliver well was comfortable voice calling, and that is when larger phones came into existence offering tablet like experience in a phone, we all famously call them “Phablet” (Phone+Tablet), Phablets offered a lot more convenience over tablet usage and grew popular among users.
Dell Streak is one of the first phablets to grow popular among users. Dell in 2009 came up with a 5-inch Phone/tablet for business class consumers, well it dint sell well and was discontinued soon. It was Samsung to globally popularize the phablet category of the Smartphones with its Galaxy Note series, and today except Apple we have almost all the major manufacturers competing in this category.

Bigger the better!

Phones dint only become bigger but they also got better. Today we have phones with 5+inch in sizes offering some of the fantastic features in a more reliable way. With the evolution of Smartphones, we no more carry portable digital cameras, MP3 players, calculators and even laptops. We hugely rely on the functionality of Smartphones to do our tasks on the go.
What really attracts the buyers is the display on the devices, these days we have pretty much set a standard that Smartphones must have a HD display. We have Samsung Galaxy S4, S4 Active, Galaxy Note 3, HTC One,HTC butterfly, Butterfly S, Micromax Canvas Turbo, Google Nexus 5 and a lot more to name offering fullHD display. With bigger and bigger displays companies have also worked hard in increasing the pixel densities of these HD displays. The displays have certainly got a lot better offering clear and crisp visuals.

Future of Displays

Well this is something time will decide as to what the futuristic displays will offer, we have been getting some information here hinting at the development of display technology in the future. Our recent story shows Apple to be working on tougher displays with sapphire glass on top and on the other hand we have some information about Samsung to be working on Foldable and flexible displays and might launch them soon on devices in 2015.
Apple’s recent launches include iPhone 5s, iPhone 5c along with iPad Air and iPad Mini with retina display. The display on iPhones remained similar to its predecessor but iPad Mini got a huge upgrade where Apple have incorporated double the resolution than its previous model iPad Mini in the same 7-inch display size.
We are soon going to see 2K, 3K and 4K resolution displays on Smartphones as companies are majorly focusing on offering quality visuals. We also have reports claiming that Apple is also soon planning to come out with a device that has 5-inch display with a resolution of 1080P. Of course, Apple would not want to be left behind in the Phablet race.

This article is originally posted on Sulekha.com by Vikram Solanki
We live in a world of technology and people are just going crazy the way technology is taking over our lives. We no longer live the way we lived 2 decades ago. For anything and everything we have a technology assisting us. Smartphone is one thing that is treated as good as a part of our body; we just can’t do without it. Smartphones has certainly brought about a revolution in the field of communication. And to more into that, there are some exceptional add-ons and accessories in the market that will just change the whole purpose you use your Smartphones for.
Sulekha takes the privilege of compiling some of the best accessories for Android Smartphones these days.
Pico Projector
Pico Projector
Pico Projector is an add-on accessory for high-end Android Smartphones. These are little portable projectors that one can carry along with them and use whenever needed. These tiny projectors vary in size, resolution and lumen brightness. Pico projectors can be extensively used for giving presentations or can be used as a mini-home theater if paired with quality speakers.
USB O-T-G cables
USB OTG
These are very low costing cables but are very useful. These cables come with USB to micro USB port where one end is connected to the phone and the other is used to connect USB devices to access it from your smartphone. But again, this is not just for every Android smartphone, it comes handy only with some Android devices (most of high-end phones). With USB O-T-G cables one can connect USB mass storage devices, keyboard, mouse and a few more devices to list. So next time you want to copy songs from your pen drive to your phone, just plug in the O-T-G cable and pen drive.
Micro USB-to-HDMI cables
HDMI
These days a lot of Smartphones come with HDMI port to connect Smartphones to TVs and Projectors and some don’t. This one is for those who do not have an HDMI port but their device is capable of supporting it. These cables come with micro USB port at one end, which is plugged into the phone, and HDMI port at the other end, which is connected to the secondary device for video output. There are a lot of manufacturers who provide these cables, they are also available online.
Battery pack covers
Extra Battery Pack
This thing is boon for heavy users as Smartphones don’t last long on the built-in battery they come with. If one does not mind putting some weight on their smartphone and getting a prolonged battery life, this is the ultimate choice for you. Battery pack covers act as an external battery which is fit into the back cover of the phone, making the phone little bulky and heavy but adds some protection too. Phones like Samsung Galaxy S2Galaxy S3,Galaxy S4, Galaxy Note 1, and 3 are some of the devices taking advantage of this accessory. There are a few more companies who get the privilege to boast such covers- just hover over the internet and you will find the best one for you.
Smartwatches
Smartwatch
Samsung came up with Galaxy Gear, which is one of the best smartwatches in the market present today, but the thing with this watch is that it only works with selected Galaxy Smartphones only. But that does not mean you do not have an alternative to it, of course you have. There are manufacturers making Smartwatches that are compatible with majority of the Android phones.
Some of them are Pebble Smartwatch, Sony Smartwatch and Burg Smartwatch- these watches can be paired with majority of the Android Smartphones.
